Kudoz grows choice and control

One of the things that characterizes humans is our capacity to think, to feel, to make choices. We think that’s true no matter what label or diagnosis might be attached to you. But, capacities are a kind of muscle: they are strengthened with continual use. In our research with folks living with developmental disabilities, choice was pretty limited. There weren’t a whole lot of spaces to practice making decisions about how to spend your time or who to spend your time with—let alone figuring out your preferences or opinions. That’s why we designed Kudoz with choice at the core. Individuals use the catalogue to book what they want to do, with whom, when. They’re in charge of their own schedule and communications. It’s OK if it’s hard, or a little rocky at first. Over time, with more and more practice, skills improve. When you sign-up to Kudoz, you make a profile about yourself. As you go on experiences and find out new things about yourself, you update your profile. That way you can see the progress you’re making. And every year, we celebrate growth and self-learning at a pretty rad badging ceremony. We’d love for you to join us, and decide how you want to use Kudoz!

Making choices, growing skills

That’s what our evaluation has shown. People who actively go on Kudoz experiences and come along to Reflection Cafe report a significant shift in their decision-making, communications, and scheduling skills. They find Kudoz gives them a reason to practice organizing their own time, and forming judgements about what they like and don’t like.
